The Children

Shanique

Shanique was born on 11th December, 1989 and has been with us at St Benedict’s since 1990.  Confined to a wheelchair, she is entirely dependent upon the caring staff at St Benedict’s for her basic care.  Shanique’s smile can light up a room, and her bubbling laughter is infectious! She loves to go out for a spin through the beautiful banana fields near the Home.

Ari-N

Ari-N was born on 26th January, 1994, and came to St Benedict’s later that year.  Confined to a wheelchair, she is entirely dependent upon the caring staff at St Benedict’s for her basic care.  Still, Ari-N is a bright and opinionated girl who is thriving at the Helping Hands Centre for Children with Special Needs, where she spends time sitting in a traditional chair and practicing to feed herself.  Since she began attending the Helping Hands Centre in 2006, she has grown stronger, more flexible and more alert.  She never wants to miss a day!

Rafique

Rafique was born 20th October 1990 and came to St Benedict’s in 1993.  He requires a wheelchair for mobility, but also likes to sit in a traditional chair during the day.  Since late 2006 he has been attending the Helping Hands Centre for Children with Special Needs and has shown great progress under their care.  He feeds himself and attempts to dress himself more and more.  He is more alert, waving in greeting and is watchful of his surroundings.  He loves to go out for walks through the farmlands surrounding St Benedict’s.

Gary

Gary was born 21st March 1997 and first came to St Benedict’s in January, 1999.  After a time in foster care, Gary was readmitted to St Benedict’s in March, 2007, and he’s very happy to be back!  Gary is well-known for his sharpness for learning.  Gary loves singing, reading and playing the tambourine.  He is very lively and outspoken and is helpful with the mentally and physically challenged children in our midst.  Our hope for Gary is to get him involved in extra-mural activities in order to develop his talents and become a well-rounded citizen.
